Semen analysis
The sperm analysis provides information about the semen and can help guide fertility assessment. Here you can learn how it is done and prepare any questions you want to ask the team.
- What do you respond with this
- How many there are, how they move, and what shape they have
- What we ask of you
- A moment here, in a private room
- Where
- Bogotá, Colombia
What is a spermogram?
The analysis studies various data from the sample, such as the quantity, movement, and shape of the sperm. The team interprets these along with your history and other studies to evaluate the next steps.
In clinical terms, it is called semen analysis or spermiogram. They are the same test with two names, and you will see both.
If you have questions about the sample collection or are concerned about feeling uncomfortable, you can discuss it with the team. We want you to understand the procedure and have a respectful space for attention.
How it is
These three steps help you understand the preparation, sample collection, and result review.
- 01
How to prepare
When scheduling, you will receive preparation instructions, including the abstinence period. If something is unclear or you couldn't follow an instruction, you can discuss it before taking the sample.
- 02
The sample collection
The sample is obtained in a private room at the clinic to facilitate analysis under the indicated conditions. You can ask how the collection is organized and share any difficulties you may have.
- 03
The result, with you
The team can explain what each value means and how it relates to your history. An isolated data point does not allow for a full understanding of your fertility situation.
What it measures, and what it doesn't
The report describes the sample analyzed at that moment. Its results need to be interpreted alongside your history and, when applicable, with other studies.
-
How many there are
The concentration of sperm in the sample.
-
How they move
How the sperm move and what proportion advances.
-
What shape do they have
The proportion of those with a normal shape.
-
What it doesn't say
This study provides information about fertility. A result outside the reference range does not solely determine if you will be able to have children. You can discuss with the team what it means and the available options.
Some results may lead to repeating the analysis or expanding the assessment. The team will consider factors such as recent illnesses and sample conditions, and will explain if another study is necessary.

What we are often asked
-
In our clinic, the sample is obtained in a private room to conduct the analysis under the planned conditions. If you have difficulty doing so, you can discuss it with the team and find out what alternatives can be considered.
-
You will receive the indication when scheduling. The abstinence time can influence the result; if you have questions or couldn't follow the preparation, consult the team before undergoing the study.
-
A low result does not alone conclude that you cannot have children. The assessment considers the complete report and your history. The team can explain if it is advisable to repeat the study and what options might be appropriate.
-
It depends on the factors influencing your case. You can discuss with the team about habits, treatments, or studies that could be useful and about the evidence and limitations of each option.
