How to Understand a Success Rate

A success rate is only useful if you know what result it measures, in which individuals, and over how many attempts. Fertilization, pregnancy, and birth are not the same. A percentage from a group does not predict your case's outcome.

Before comparing a percentage, ask what "success" means in that figure. It may refer to different stages and use a different denominator.

What You Should Identify

  • If it measures fertilization, pregnancy, or birth.
  • If it is calculated per initiated cycle, extraction, or transfer.
  • What characteristics the included individuals had.
  • From what period and how many cases the data comes.

Why Two Figures May Not Be Comparable

The age of the egg provider, the use of donation, treatments, and patient selection can modify the results of a group. A percentage difference does not alone demonstrate that one clinic is better.

The Question for Your Consultation

"What data is relevant to my case and what uncertainty remains?" Ask them to differentiate a published statistic from an individual estimate.

If a figure is unclear, you can ask for its source and an explanation of what it allows you to conclude. No percentage guarantees an individual birth. You can also evaluate the quality of care, communication, prices, and clarity of the plan.
