The "Active Waiting": Mindfulness Tools to Calm the Mind
Does uncertainty make you anxious? Discover simple Mindfulness techniques and sensory anchoring to transform waiting into a space of calm and mental well-being.
On the journey of surrogacy, there is one ingredient that cannot be rushed: time. Once the medical or legal steps are completed, there comes a moment when there is nothing left to do but wait. Wait for the results, wait for the next ultrasound, wait for the big day.
This lack of direct control can turn into a silent anxiety that makes you live in the future, imagining scenarios or counting the days on the calendar.
What’s the solution? Move from "anxious waiting" to "active waiting." Mindfulness won’t make time pass faster, but it will give you the superpower to navigate this process with serenity, bringing your mind back to where it belongs: the here and now. Here are three simple tools to achieve this.
1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Rule (For when your mind races)
If you feel overwhelmed by thoughts about the process during your workday or before sleeping, use this sensory anchoring exercise to stop the train of anxiety:
Pause for a moment, take a deep breath, and name in your mind:
- 5 things you can see around you (a lamp, a plant, a pen...).
- 4 things you can touch or feel (the texture of your clothes, the chair, the air on your face...).
- 3 things you can hear (the traffic outside, a bird, the hum of the fridge...).
- 2 things you can smell (coffee, perfume, the smell of rain...).
- 1 thing you can taste (the remnants of lunch, a piece of gum...).
Why does it work? Because anxiety lives in the future, but your senses only exist in the present. By activating them, you force your brain to calm down.
2. The "Box" Breathing (Your natural tranquilizer)
When you notice your chest tightening at the thought of waiting times, turn to square breathing. It’s a technique used by high-stress professionals to reset the nervous system:
- Inhale through your nose counting to 4.
- Hold the air in your lungs counting to 4.
- Exhale gently through your mouth counting to 4.
- Stay empty (without air) counting to 4.
Repeat this cycle four times. You will immediately notice how your heart rate lowers and your thoughts clear.
3. Practice "Radical Acceptance"
Sometimes anxiety increases because we fight against reality: "Why is everything taking so long?", "Why haven't they written to me today?".
Radical acceptance doesn’t mean resignation; it means stopping the waste of energy on what you cannot change today. Repeat this phrase as a mantra when you feel frustration:
"Today I don’t have control over the timing, but I do have control over how I react to it. I choose to trust the process and the team at Fertility Dreams".

Your life won’t start on the day your baby is born; your life is happening right now. Don’t gift these months of waiting to anguish. Practicing active waiting is the first gift of well-being you give to your future family: a calm, strong mom or dad ready for tomorrow.
Breathe. Everything is going well.
