The studies of intended parents

The initial evaluation reviews your medical history and the genetic material to be used. The studies depend on who provides eggs or sperm, the background, and the treatment plan; there is no identical list for all families.

Preliminary studies help decide a plan and reduce avoidable risks. You can ask what information each study provides and how it helps assess your situation.

What is reviewed

The team considers personal and family history, previous treatments, and, when applicable, tests for infections and reproduction. The evaluation of the sperm provider may include a sperm analysis. If own eggs will be used, that possibility is also studied.

What changes according to your case

A person providing genetic material does not necessarily need the same studies as their partner. Also, a test done a long time ago may not be valid for any procedure: you can confirm with the clinic if it is still useful for the current plan.

How to review your studies with the team

Provide complete reports, with date and laboratory. Before repeating them, ask if the ones you have are sufficient. If an out-of-range result appears, ask for an explanation of what it means for treatment and what needs to be confirmed.

Do not stop medications or take supplements on your own to modify a result.
