What is a blastocyst

A blastocyst is an embryo that has reached a developmental stage with differentiated cell groups and an inner cavity. The laboratory evaluates its development to decide if it can be transferred, frozen, or studied.

Blastocyst is the name of a stage in embryonic development. It does not mean that pregnancy already exists or that the embryo is guaranteed a result.

Why it appears in your report

After fertilization, the laboratory observes how each embryo develops. Some reach the blastocyst stage while others stop developing earlier. The team decides what to do based on that evolution and the clinical plan.

Appearance does not say it all

The letters and numbers of a classification describe characteristics observed by the laboratory. They are not a genetic test. An embryo with good appearance is not guaranteed to implant.

How to read the news without losing context

Ask how many blastocysts can be used, which ones were preserved, and how their order of use was decided. If a classification appears, ask for an explanation of the scale used by that laboratory.

A result that requires further evaluation should not be confused with one that has been discarded. The complete report and conversation with the team allow you to know the options. You can bring any questions that arose while reading other sources to that conversation.
